If you are planning to visit Daejeon, the famous Sungsimdang line is something you cannot avoid. To get the legendary Strawberry Cake (Ttalgi Siru), many travelers start waiting as early as dawn. Here is my personal 6:30 AM survival guide to help you succeed.

The beautiful exterior of Sungsimdang Cake Boutique at dawn. Even before the sun rises, the “Bread Pilgrimage” begins.
Sungsimdang (성심당) is the heart of Daejeon and a must-visit for bread lovers in Korea. Their Strawberry Siru (딸기시루) cake has become a national sensation, leading to massive lines every single day.If you are wondering how to actually get your hands on one, here is my personal experience from January 2026.

The 6:30 AM Strategy⏰

The waiting game begins in the underground passage at 6:30 AM. People bring chairs and hot packs to endure the cold dawn.
The bakery officially opens at 8:00 AM, but the battle starts much earlier. I arrived at 6:30 AM and found a long line already forming in the underground passage near the main branch. Even in the freezing cold, people were waiting with chairs and hot packs. If you want to ensure you get the popular seasonal cakes, arriving at least 1.5 hours before opening is a must.
Essential Tip: The Pickup System💡

Many tourists get confused by the system, so pay close attention to this workflow to save time:
- Dedicated Line: There is a specific line for “Siru” cake pickup next to the main branch. Don’t stand in the regular bread line!
- Pay Together, Pick up Separately: At the “Siru” payment counter, you can pay for both your cakes and rolls (like the Pure Roll) at once.
- The Route: You can pick up your Strawberry Siru right after paying. However, to get your Roll Cakes, you must move to the Cake Boutique building with your receipt.

Thanks to this system, I managed to finish the entire process within 30 minutes of the doors opening!
My Sweet Rewards (Price in USD)

Mission Accomplished! Leaving with bags full of joy (and a lot of strawberries). The heavy weight of the bags tells you just how generous Sungsimdang is with their ingredients.
The wait was freezing, but the first bite made it all disappear.
The strawberries are incredibly fresh and the cake is surprisingly heavy!
Here is what I bought: Item KRW Price Estimated USD Strawberry Siru (Maknae) 43,000 KRW ~$31.85Matcha Siru 43,000 KRW ~$31.85Pure Roll (순수롤) 14,000 KRW ~$10.37Fresh Tangerine Roll (생귤롤) 18,000 KRW ~$13.33
Note: Prices are based on an exchange rate of $1 ≈ 1,350 KRW.
Bonus: The Sandwich Station (Less Crowded!)🍰

A tray full of happiness from the Sandwich Station. The Apple Brie Cheese sandwich (on the right) is a game-changer with its perfect balance of sweet apples and creamy cheese.
Where to Stay: Hotel Onoma Daejeon

To survive an early morning wait, staying nearby is the best strategy. I recommend Hotel Onoma, Autograph Collection. It is the most luxurious 5-star hotel in Daejeon, conveniently connected to the Shinsegae Department Store. After your “Bread Pilgrimage,” there is no better place to relax and enjoy your cake in a premium room.
